If done in experienced hands retina laser causes no complications or side effects. However, laser done extensively all over the retina can cause visual field loss. Therefore it is important not to overdo laser as the scar remains permanently and even increases in size over the years. 

Accidental burns to the centre of the retina or the fovea causes a drop in visual acuity. Hence it is absolutely mandatory that the retina specialist is careful to avoid the area while doing focal laser for diabetic macular edema or CSR.

Common Side Effects

1. Temporary Vision Changes

   • Patients may experience blurred vision, floaters, or decreased contrast sensitivity immediately after the procedure. These effects are usually temporary and resolve within hours.

2.  Inflammation

   • Mild inflammation of the retina or surrounding tissues may occur, potentially causing discomfort or light sensitivity. This also is very temporary. 

3. Small Scars or Spots

   • The laser creates tiny burns in the retina, which may result in small scars. These scars usually do not affect vision significantly but can sometimes cause visual field defects if located in critical areas.

Less Common Side Effects

1. Undesired Visual Field Loss

   • If the laser affects areas near the macula or optic nerve, there’s a risk of partial visual field loss or blind spots. If laser is done too extensively in the periphery there can be visual field loss.

2. Retinal Detachment

   • Although rare, the laser treatment if done with very high power, can cause retinal holes, leading to an increased risk of detachment, which requires urgent surgical intervention.

3. Increased Macular Edema

   • In some cases, the procedure might aggravate swelling in the macula, impairing central vision.

4. Damage to the Choroid or Other Ocular Structures

   • Overly aggressive laser application can inadvertently damage deeper layers, potentially affecting vision. It can cause choroidal detachment, when done too aggressively.
