EYE BLEEDS: What to do next?
Bleeding inside the eye is often seen initially as red floaters. If bleeding is too much vision is completely lost. The condition of bleeding inside the vitreous cavity of the eye is called vitreous haemorrhage.
All cases of bleeding require immediate evaluation. The cause of the bleed needs to be assessed with urgency. This is because in some cases, acute PVD can cause retinal tears which cause bleeds. This is an emergency and requires either immediate barrage laser to the retinal tear or surgery to prevent retinal detachment.
Most other cases as in proliferative diabetic retinopathy or retinal vein occlusions can be treated conservatively initially. Injectioons can be given to reduce the neovascularization and the bleed. Rarely cases require retina surgery.
Vision usually recovers after treatment unless the retina is badly damaged.
