What happens if you don’t operate a retinal detachment?

If retinal detachment is ignored it results in total or partial blindness. Most likely the entire retina strips away from the underlying choroid causing a total retinal detachment. If left untreated this closes like a funnel, making it inoperable. Very rarely some detachments resolve spontaneously causing degeneration of the retina and permanent visual field loss in the area of detachment.
