Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy or NPDR is an early stage of diabetic retinopathy in which there may not be any symptoms. The doctor identifies this stage after examining the retina carefully. It may not need treatment unless there is associated diabetic macular edema. In severe cases when blood flow has come down to the retina, laser may be indicated. In some cases laser is done to the macula to reduce leakage from microaneurysms.
